SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES

Our goal is to help shape the future of responsible travel together with those who stay, work, and partner with us. IHG Malta recognizes that businesses can have a negative impact on the environment. The key to delivering our strategic priority to care for our people, communities, and planet is our “Journey to Tomorrow” plan! At InterContinental Malta, we are considering how our company can safeguard the environment, including many corporate policies addressing climate change.

Following our “Journey to Tomorrow” commitment and the Green Key accreditation, IHG has taken several steps to ensure sustainable operations, such as providing filtered glass-bottled water aimed at reducing plastic waste by an estimated 300,000. IHG has also implemented a linen and towel change system, and a bulk dispensary system for soap, shampoo, and shower gel, giving guests the opportunity to reuse resources.

In March 2024, InterContinental Malta was certified with the Green Key ecolabel. Coordinated by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), Green Key is a global voluntary eco-certification program. With more than 4,000 certified hotels and other establishments in 60 countries, Green Key is the leading standard for excellence in the field of environmental responsibility and sustainable operation within the tourism and hospitality industry. The certification process evaluates the establishment’s environmental management, energy conservation, waste management, water conservation, and other sustainable practices. Carbon & Energy

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance
With the hotel sector accounting for around 1% of global carbon emissions, we know it’s important that we play our part in protecting our planet for the future.  We will work to reduce our energy use and carbon emissions in line with climate science.

People

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance

With hundreds of colleagues in our hotel touching the lives of thousands of people every day, we have an opportunity to help create a future where equality, inclusion and fairness are experienced by all.  We will work to champion a diverse culture where everyone can thrive.

Water

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance
Demand for water often exceeds supply in many parts of the world, so, it’s never been more important for us to find ways to reduce our usage and work with others towards sustainable solutions that create water access for all. We will work to conserve water and help secure water access in those areas at greatest risk.

Communities

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance

We are proud to be at the heart of our communities and recognise the opportunity to shape a positive future for local people and the generations to come.  We will work on social projects to improve the lives of people in our community.

Waste

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance
With only 9% of plastic currently being recycled and around one-third of food produced being wasted across the globe, we’re passionate about providing our guests with a more sustainable stay. We will work to pioneer the transformation to a minimal waste hospitality industry.

Environment

InterContinental Malta - Environmental, Social, and Governance

During the last 20 years we planted 1300 trees and plants of various sizes and types, which offset 62,400 pounds of CO2 annually. Additionally, the hotel has plans to continue this initiative, further contributing to the environment.
