Christmas in Malta may not be what you expect it to be, but it does have its own unique “flavors” and “vibe” to it that you’ll only find in Malta.
No, Christmas in the Maltese islands does not include building snowmen or skiing down a snow-covered mountain but there are may other things you can do, see and experience.
In this post today, we want to share with you some of our favorite Christmas activities that you can also enjoy while on your holiday, so here goes:
Christmas In Malta: Celebrating The Holidays In Malta
The Ghajnsielem “Living Crib”
In Malta, the Christmas crib, which you can see pictured here is a very common tradition dating back many years but this year, the tiny island of Gozo has taken it a step further and built its very own 20,000 square meter “Christmas village” where the whole Christmas story comes to life acted out by actors with decorations themed around Christmas.
This is a fun activity for all the family and if you could make it to Gozo, see some other things we recommend seeing and doing while there:
Tour Other Christmas Cribs Around The Island
Seeing how this is a popular tradition in Malta (i.e building Christmas nativity scenes), if you enjoy the live crib in Gozo, you’d be happy to know that most other towns in Malta offer similar exhibitions as well.
These cribs are handmade by locals and they are usually displayed during Christmas time at art exhibitions so it would be a nice treat for you to see while in Malta.
Visit The Many Valletta Attractions
A town you may want to see during Christmas time is the capital city of Valletta which during Christmas time will be filled with people in the streets doing their Christmas shopping, Christmas lights and music echoing everywhere and several Christmas concerts happening around the city.
Most state-sponsored Christmas and New Year celebrations will also be held in Valletta. This guide should give you a list of what is happening and when.
See The 7-Storey High Christmas Tree In Birzebbuga
Birzebbuga is a quiet little town at the southernmost point in Malta but this year, they are making a big splash during Christmas time by hosting the biggest Christmas tree ever seen in Malta towering at a whopping 7 storeys above street level.
If you’d like to see this happening (for the first time ever), then head on over to Birzebbuga, explore this interesting town and enjoy the biggest Christmas tree you’ll probably see this year.
See Christmas At Popeye’s Village
One of Malta’s most popular attractions is the Popeye’s Village that was used as a film set for the 1980 film starring Robin Williams.
While this set can be visited throughout the whole year, during Christmas time it is turned into a Santa’s Village where you can visit and enjoy the fantastic Christmas spirit that is organized and get charmed by the “cartoonish” buildings that are still in use today.
You can see more information about Christmas in Popeye’s Village here.
