Valletta Malta Places to visit on holiday

Although Malta has a lot to offer to the million plus tourists that visit here every year, it’s not all about the touristy stuff right?

Although small in size, Malta offers a selection of entertainment for everybody that doesn’t include the usual “touristy” locations that you may have heard about up till now.

Today we are looking at some of the best non-touristy things to do in Malta.

These are great places to visit if you want to explore the beauty and history of Malta in your own unique way, taking your time to appreciate the unique flavor of Malta that most tourists never get to see while on our shores.

We hope you enjoy this list. If you’re interested to know more about Malta, visit our official blog for more tips and things to do around the island.

7 Non-Touristy Things To Do In Malta

Costa Europa leaving Valletta, Malta

Eat Pastizzi

They might not be the healthiest thing ever, but they sure rank up there with Malta’s favorite “delicacy”.

Pastizzi are a Maltese snack that are made of heavily greased puff pastry and filled with either ricotta or peas, although recently they’ve also been adding chicken pastizzi and Nutella ones as well (if you have a sweet tooth).

We really, really suggest you try these pastizzis when in Malta, just don’t like them too much as chances are you won’t find them anywhere else but Malta.

Visit Buskett Forest

A surprising awesome location where it’s not known by most tourists is the Buskett Forest which was built by the Knights of Malta as their designated “hunting” area.

Today, this is now a protected ”landmark” in Malta and also hosts the President’s Summer Palace. However, everyone is still very much welcome to walk amongst the decades old trees while enjoying the breath-taking greenery and views.

Visit A Local Market

A popular market that is a common “tourist hub” is the fish market down in Marsaxlokk and while we do suggest you visit this specific market, it’s good to mention that there are many others that happen throughout the week that we’re sure you’d be interested in.

There’s nothing like a bit of price haggling on a Sunday morning in Malta.

Explore The Island’s Beauty

Malta has a lot to offer, even more so if you just go off the beaten path and explore the many, many interesting things that you will find on every corner.

Take a day or two to “just explore” and we are sure you’ll find some memories and good stories to remember for a lifetime.

Have A Glass Of Wine In A Maltese Wine Bar

Nothing screams “Malta” like a glass of red Maltese wine while sitting at a local wine bar overlooking some majestic views of say Valletta or Gozo.

If you’re a wine drinker, give Maltese wine a go; you won’t regret it!

Visit The Little Lesser Known Towns

Tourists mostly visit the “popular” towns such as Mdina, Valletta, Gozo, Sliema and so forth but there are many other towns and villages that we’re sure you’d like.

Simply getting on a bus and spending a day exploring these tiny towns will guarantee a fun day out for all the family.

Oh and if you’re lucky…

…Try To Make It To A Village Festa

Every Summer, the Maltese towns host a local feast dedicated to the patron saint of the town.

This result is a 4-day long “festas” where the whole town gets turned into one big street party with live entertainment, shows, food stalls, fireworks and so forth.

Definitely a sight to experience. Beware though; you may find some tourists at these “festas” but they’ll be hidden in a slew of locals getting their “festa mood” going.
